Kylian Mbappé leaves Nike for On after nearly two decades, and headlines have framed the split as one of football’s biggest endorsement shocks. The structure of his new relationship with the Swiss sportswear brand suggests something more ambitious. On says the Real Madrid and France star will work directly on footwear and apparel development, while his compensation includes both cash and equity. This is not just a change of logo on a boot.
The move arrives while Mbappé is firmly at the center of the Ballon d’Or conversation. At 27, he is joining On in the middle of his commercial and playing prime. Nike’s relationship with him dated to 2006 and eventually made him one of the defining faces of the Mercurial line. On is not signing a legend on the way out. It is taking one of Nike’s most recognizable football properties at full force.

I still dream of playing football.
That might surprise you, coming from someone who plays it for a living.
But it’s true.
I still dream of playing with my friends.
Playing until sunset. Until dinner.
Playing just because it was a game, long before it could become a career.
I have followed this dream for as long as I can remember.
Once again it has led me to one of the biggest changes in my life.
Now, I find myself surrounded by innovators who dream of the same things I do.
Of bringing foot as close as possible to ball.
Of bringing the people as close as possible to the game.
Of bringing the world as close as possible to play.
I guess that’s the thing about dreams that refuse to change.
They’re usually the ones that change everything.
Dream On.
How On plans to build around Mbappé
On does not even have a football boot on general sale yet. Its first commercial models are planned for 2027, and Mbappé will help develop and test them along with future apparel. The company is adapting LightSpray, its robotic manufacturing process that creates an upper from a continuous sprayed filament, for football. Barcelona and Switzerland midfielder Sydney Schertenleib is also part of the product-development group, bringing input from the women’s game.
Thierry Henry gives the project its football structure. On has named him Director of Football after he spent much of the past year working behind the scenes on the company’s entry into the sport. His remit reaches across product, athlete relationships and football culture. Reports also credit Henry with helping recruit Mbappé, giving On a former France and Arsenal icon who can connect its engineers and executives to elite players.
After a year behind the scenes, working with us on the future of the game we love, meet On’s Director of Football. His view? ‘It’s limitless’.

For Nike, the loss is more symbolic than existential. Nike had spent years building a football lineage around the Mercurial, from Cristiano Ronaldo to Mbappé and the players following them. It still outfits France through 2034 and retains major stars including Erling Haaland and Vinícius Júnior. Real Madrid, meanwhile, has an adidas contract through 2034. That means On can put its footwear on Mbappé in a Nike France kit and an adidas Real Madrid kit without first paying for either team’s apparel rights.
Federer built the blueprint On is bringing to football
Roger Federer is the clearest reason to view the Mbappé deal as something larger than an endorsement. When Federer joined On in 2019, the company publicly called him a co-owner and entrepreneur. He worked with the founders on product development, marketing and athlete culture. That relationship helped produce THE ROGER footwear franchise and preceded On’s expansion into performance tennis with players including Iga Świątek and Ben Shelton.
On has not publicly disclosed Federer’s exact current ownership percentage. The company continues to describe him as a co-entrepreneur and licenses Federer-related trademarks and image rights from Tenro AG. The frequently repeated figure of roughly 3 percent comes from outside estimates, not a current company disclosure. On brought Federer inside the business rather than treating him solely as rented advertising.
Mbappé now appears to be getting a football version of that model while he is still at his peak. His On compensation includes equity, although the company has not disclosed the size of the stake, its value or the length of the contract. L’Équipe has reported a 10-year agreement, but On has not publicly confirmed that term. There is also no confirmed Mbappé sub-brand comparable to THE ROGER at this stage. Mbappé is already familiar with the ownership side of the sport as the majority owner of SM Caen.
Why Kylian Mbappé leaves Nike for On
The scale difference remains enormous. On generated about $3.66 billion in 2025 net sales when converted at the September 18 exchange rate, while Nike reported $46.4 billion in fiscal 2026 revenue. On is not about to displace Nike across global football. It does not need to. A relatively small share of the boot, training and football-lifestyle markets could be meaningful to a company that is still a fraction of Nike’s size.
The harder test starts when the boots reach players. Football footwear has to solve for touch, traction, lateral movement, striking and durability in ways that running shoes do not. LightSpray gives On a distinctive manufacturing story, but Mbappé’s name cannot prove the product. If the technology works, however, On will have entered football with a recognizable technical identity instead of another variation on a traditional boot.
Federer supplied the proof of concept. Henry has been building the football operation. Kylian Mbappé leaves Nike for On with a financial stake in the outcome and a role in making the product itself. Nike has lost an ambassador it spent two decades developing. On has gained something potentially more valuable: a player positioned to help build the category with it.
