Jamal Musiala says neurological dysfunction caused two on-field collapses

Jamal Musiala has linked the two on-field collapses that interrupted Bayern Munich’s final preseason friendlies to a neurological dysfunction. He said the condition can produce short absence episodes and described them as temporary and readily treatable. The disclosure reframes Musiala’s return to Bayern training, which followed a six-month recovery from the severe leg and ankle injury he sustained at the 2025 Club World Cup.

In an Instagram statement, Musiala said he’s receiving specialist care, feels optimistic and has been told there is no additional health risk. Continuing everyday life and playing football was his own choice, made in consultation with specialists and approved by neurologists. He didn’t identify the dysfunction more specifically and asked that the remaining details stay among his closest circle, Bayern and his medical team.

The first incident occurred during Bayern’s 3-1 Telekom Cup victory over RB Leipzig. Musiala entered in the second half and collapsed off the ball late in the match without apparent contact. Bayern’s medical staff treated him on the field before he stood and left with assistance from the team doctor.

Three days later, Musiala came on against Heidenheim shortly after the hour and went down within minutes. Players gathered around him while medical staff responded. He returned to his feet and left the field with assistance, but he couldn’t continue. Bayern won the friendly 4-2.

Bayern’s public comments have remained limited. Board member for sport Max Eberl said after the Heidenheim match that the club was aware of the issue and deferred the explanation to Musiala. Bayern hasn’t released a separate medical update or confirmed whether the midfielder will be available for its first competitive match.

What comes next for Musiala and Bayern

Approval from neurological specialists to continue playing doesn’t confirm that Musiala will face Borussia Dortmund. Bayern opens its competitive season at Signal Iduna Park in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup on Saturday, then begins its Bundesliga title defense against Stuttgart on August 28. No squad decision has been announced for either match.

The disclosure adds another medical issue to a comeback already shaped by a long absence. Musiala returned in January after the Club World Cup injury and worked his way back into Germany’s squad. He later converted a penalty during Germany’s World Cup exit to Paraguay, a milestone in a comeback that had started with controlled training sessions and carefully managed minutes.

Musiala has answered the question that followed the two collapses without opening the rest of his medical record. Treatment is underway, specialists have approved his decision to continue playing and he says there is no additional health risk. Whether that approval extends to Saturday’s squad remains Bayern’s next decision.
