Manchester United didn’t meet the price reportedly attached to Carlos Baleba in 2025. They returned one year later and signed the 22-year-old from Brighton in a package widely reported at up to about $95 million (£70 million). His contract runs through June 2031, with an option for another season, and his arrival gives Manchester United’s midfield depth a different athletic profile.
Brighton’s asking price was reported at $139.4 million (€120 million) last summer, with other accounts also placing the barrier above £100 million. The maximum package now being reported sits roughly $44 million below the more specific figure. The clubs left the fee undisclosed. Published breakdowns differ on the guaranteed payment, but the widely reported £70 million ceiling remains below Brighton’s 2025 position.
Why Brighton’s leverage changed
Still, that doesn’t mean Brighton lost $44 million. An asking price isn’t an accepted bid, especially when a club has little incentive to sell. Baleba still had almost three years left on his Brighton contract in August 2025, and Brighton could point to the nine-figure market already established for young Premier League midfielders.
Meanwhile, a year later, the supporting evidence had changed. Baleba’s progressive carries fell from 6.7 to 5.1 per 90 league minutes, while his ground-duel success dropped from 54.8% to 47.4%. His chances created and shot volume also declined. Yet his possession-adjusted defensive actions edged up from 8.2 to 8.4, and his aerial wins increased from 1.3 to 1.6 per 90. The season reduced his premium without erasing his defensive base.
As a result, the negotiation changed with it. Brighton had fewer than two years left on Baleba’s deal, and sporting director Mike Cave confirmed that the midfielder wanted the move. Reports say Brighton retained a sell-on clause, preserving some future upside if his value rises again. Brighton signed Baleba from Lille in 2023 and sold him after 112 appearances, turning three seasons of development into a major fee.
A discount built on a rebound bet
United’s bet is that Baleba’s 2024/25 level remains recoverable. He advanced the ball an average of 5.2 meters per carry that season, ranked fourth among qualifying defensive midfielders for progressive carries and clocked a 34.5 km/h top speed. Those traits can help United recover central space, escape pressure and cover behind an aggressive out-of-possession shape.
However, he isn’t a pure deep-lying conductor. His passing became more conservative last season, and his best role may be beside a more expansive distributor, allowing him to defend forward and carry possession rather than organize every buildup. United are paying for movement, recovery speed and the ability to turn a regain into progression.
Even so, the reported price still carries risk. Baleba is recovering from an ankle ligament injury sustained in preseason, with a possible mid-September return reported rather than guaranteed. He also arrives after a season in which his most valuable attacking-transition skill became less frequent. United are betting that his age, Premier League experience and physical profile make the dip reversible.
For Brighton, the deal didn’t simply surrender the premium the club sought in 2025. Their history of setting a nine-figure benchmark for young midfielders shaped the earlier talks, while the reported sell-on clause gives them another route to profit if Baleba’s value rises again. A fee below the previous asking price can still be strong business for the seller.
The $44 million gap will draw attention, but it isn’t the result United are buying. The club is betting that the carrying, speed and defensive coverage that once made Baleba a $139.4 million target survived a less convincing season. United bought after the market cooled. Baleba now has to make last summer’s price look plausible again.
