South Africa international Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25, the country’s sports ministry announced Saturday. No cause of death was disclosed.
Only weeks earlier, Adams had played a central role in one of the finest tournaments in South Africa’s football history. He appeared in all three of the nation’s group-stage matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, helping Bafana Bafana advance beyond the group stage for the first time. He started against Mexico and Czechia before coming off the bench in a 1-0 victory over South Korea that secured qualification.
South Africa’s tournament concluded with a Round of 32 loss to Canada, ending the country’s deepest World Cup run.
The tournament also brought personal hardship. Adams’ grandmother died the day before South Africa faced Czechia, and he was substituted at halftime of that match. He returned for the decisive victory over South Korea, making his final World Cup appearance in the result that carried South Africa into the knockout rounds.
Before England and Norway met in Saturday’s World Cup quarterfinal, players, match officials and supporters observed a moment of silence in Adams’ memory.
From academy prospect to World Cup international
Adams’ path to the national team began at Stellenbosch FC, where he progressed through the club’s youth system before earning a place in the senior squad. His performances led to a move to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025.
During the 2025-26 season, Adams helped Sundowns win the CAF Champions League, adding a continental title before representing South Africa at the World Cup later that year.
He made his senior international debut against Mozambique in 2022 and finished with 13 appearances for South Africa. His two international goals both came during qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The South African Football Players’ Union said, “South African football has lost a gifted player, a proud servant of the game and a young life that still had so much to offer.”
Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie said, “Our nation mourns alongside his family, his teammates and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international.”
FIFA president Gianni Infantino also offered condolences to Adams’ family, friends and teammates.
Adams’ career ended after reaching milestones that many players spend years pursuing. He represented his country at a FIFA World Cup, helped Mamelodi Sundowns lift the CAF Champions League trophy and earned 13 international caps before his death at 25.
