England and France will meet in Miami Gardens on Saturday to decide third place at the 2026 World Cup. France lost 2-0 to Spain on Tuesday. England’s 2-1 semifinal loss to Argentina followed on Wednesday. They’re now scheduled for Match 103 in a 104-game tournament.
The expanded bracket raises the possible team total from seven matches to eight. The 48-team format added a round of 32 before the familiar knockout rounds, so the two semifinal losers have already completed what used to be the full route to the title. The bronze final is the fixture that turns a seven-game team schedule into eight.
The recovery window makes the problem visible. France played July 14 and England July 15, then both return July 18. FIFPRO uses five days, or 120 hours, as its baseline between appearances for performance and injury-risk management over a season. Any player used in both a semifinal and the bronze final will fall below that interval. England’s window is one day shorter.
Thomas Tuchel put the issue in blunt terms after England’s defeat. “None of these players, none of the French players want to play this match.” His comment doesn’t prove that the fixture is meaningless in every case. It does identify the labor question: should players be required to complete another match days after the defining loss of their tournament?
FIFA has already made a different choice in another expanded competition. In 2025, the Club World Cup scrapped its third-place match, allowing the two losing semifinalists to finish without another fixture. The European Championship has also gone without a third-place playoff since 1980. The men’s World Cup has kept it.
What the bronze final still decides
Abolishing it would remove something real. The competition introduced the playoff in 1934, skipped it in 1950 and restored it four years later. It has remained on every men’s World Cup schedule since. The game fixes third and fourth place in the official standings, while its goals enter the tournament record. Four of Just Fontaine’s record 13 goals in 1958 came in France’s third-place win over West Germany.
This year’s match has its own stakes. Its goals count toward the Golden Boot, and Kylian Mbappé enters with eight at the tournament and 20 across his World Cup career. Saturday is also Didier Deschamps’ final match after 14 years as France coach, a tenure that included the 2018 title, the 2022 final and three consecutive semifinal appearances. A rotated lineup can also give less-used players one last competitive chance.
There is money attached, though it isn’t paid directly to the players. FIFA’s last detailed finish-by-finish schedule assigned $29 million to the third-place member association and $27 million to fourth. The federation later raised the overall distribution to $871 million. FIFA’s $871 million World Cup payout did not come with a revised placement table at the same level of detail. The last published $2 million gap gives national associations a concrete reason to value the result, separate from the players’ workload.
The game can carry the most weight when third place would mark an exceptional national run. Croatia beat Morocco 2-1 in 2022 to secure a second consecutive top-three finish, four years after reaching the final. A universal rule has to account for teams in that position, not only former champions whose title run has just ended.
Still, meaning and necessity are different tests. FIFA has already shown that a major tournament can end for semifinal losers without another placement game. The current schedule also leaves no room for the recovery standard cited by the players’ union. If the bronze final is to survive, it should come with at least five full days between matches. The 2026 calendar doesn’t provide that.
Under this format, the stronger choice is to retire the game and recognize both semifinal losers equally. Under the 32-team format, the bronze final followed six previous matches. In 2026, it follows seven, once the title chance has ended and before the recommended recovery window has passed. Third place has value. It no longer justifies an eighth match.
