Jude Bellingham scored twice as England beat Norway 2-1 after extra time in a World Cup quarterfinal at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. The result sent Thomas Tuchel’s team into the semifinals after its dramatic win over Mexico.
Andreas Schjelderup put Norway ahead in the 36th minute. Martin Ødegaard found him on the left side of the box, and Schjelderup’s left-footed finish flew into the top-right corner. Norway had arrived in the quarterfinals through its comeback against Brazil.
England equalized at 45+2. Anthony Gordon supplied Bellingham on the left side of the area, and the midfielder drove a left-footed shot across goal into the bottom-right corner. Tuchel then introduced Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze for Noni Madueke and Declan Rice at halftime.
England kept Erling Haaland scoreless for the first time in this World Cup despite two dangerous headers. Jordan Pickford saved his point-blank effort in the 35th minute, and Haaland headed narrowly wide in the 53rd. Two minutes later, his foul in the box caused VAR to overturn Torbjørn Heggem’s apparent goal. The sequence captured how England contained a striker who entered with seven tournament goals, denying him a clean finish even when Norway supplied service into the area. Regulation ended 1-1 after nine minutes of second-half stoppage time.
Bellingham struck again in the 93rd minute. After Norway couldn’t fully clear an England corner, he scored right-footed from the center of the box into the bottom-left corner. England protected the lead through the rest of extra time to secure a first World Cup semifinal appearance since 2018.
