Rafael Leão gets Portugal’s No. 7 as Ronaldo’s future stays open

Rafael Leão has been assigned No. 7 ahead of Portugal’s Nations League meeting with Denmark, placing Cristiano Ronaldo’s number beside a different name on the squad list. Fábio Silva is listed at 17, the shirt Leão usually wears.

The switch follows Ronaldo’s departure from the national team camp in Copenhagen, bringing questions about his football future into Portugal’s preparations for its next match. The captain has left this gathering. Whether he returns for another remains unresolved.

Ronaldo said he decided to leave after Jorge Jesus’s press conference and a conversation with federation president Pedro Proença. He promised to explain his reasons later and wished his teammates luck. His statement did not announce international retirement.

He had been an unused substitute during Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway. Jesus acknowledged that he’d intended to bring Ronaldo on before changing his mind, but denied that the forward had refused to train.

Why Portugal couldn’t leave No. 7 empty

Article 37.01 of UEFA’s 2026/27 Nations League regulations limits league-phase shirt numbers to 1 through 23. Portugal’s Denmark squad contains 23 players. With a different number required for each, the team can’t keep seven vacant and still name a full squad.

The rule requires someone to use it. It doesn’t require that someone to be Leão, and it doesn’t designate him as Ronaldo’s permanent successor. The competition has a numbering requirement, not a succession policy.

There’s precedent for another player wearing seven in Ronaldo’s absence. Bruma wore it in Portugal’s 5-2 friendly win over Sweden in March 2024 and scored after coming off the bench. Ronaldo continued his international career afterward. The number changing hands didn’t close it then.

Ronaldo has also built a commercial identity around CR7, carrying the seven far beyond the national-team shirt. That association gives Leão’s allocation a symbolism a routine squad change rarely possesses. Coming immediately after Ronaldo’s departure, it offers the appearance of a handover before the terms of any handover have been settled.

For Leão, the new number doesn’t automatically bring the captaincy, a starting place or Ronaldo’s responsibilities in the attack. Those are separate football decisions. He can be Portugal’s No. 7 against Denmark without being named the player around whom its next era will be built.

Portugal has filled the space beside seven on its squad list. It hasn’t yet settled the space Ronaldo will occupy in its future.
