Harry Kane’s Ballon d’Or tribute to the wife who knew him at school

Harry Kane had a familiar name for his wife when he accepted the Ballon d’Or. “To my wife, Kate, my best friend,” he said, before thanking the woman he’d known since primary school for helping him reach football’s biggest individual prize.

At the London Palladium on Monday, one of the leading Ballon d’Or contenders became the first Englishman to win since Michael Owen in 2001. Kane used the occasion to honor Katie Goodland and a partnership that predates his England captaincy and move to Bayern Munich.

He described their anxious wait for the result, said he felt she’d wanted the award even more than he did, and acknowledged the sacrifices she’d made to support his ambitions. He also recognized those ambitions as dreams they shared.

“This is a trophy that we celebrate, not me,” Kane said. The language echoed his wedding announcement in June 2019, when he wrote that he’d finally married his best friend. Seven years later, he was using the same description as a Ballon d’Or winner.

The school photograph with David Beckham

Kane and Goodland attended primary and secondary school together in Chingford, east London. In 2005, they were among the schoolchildren invited to the launch of David Beckham’s football academy. Kane was 11. In the photograph from the event, the future England captain and his future wife stand on opposite sides of Beckham.

The connection to Beckham ran through Kane’s childhood. Both played for Ridgeway Rovers and attended Chingford Foundation School. Kane has recalled the encouragement he took from seeing someone from his neighborhood reach that level. Beckham’s Real Madrid shirt hung at school. Eventually, one of Kane’s England shirts joined it.

This summer, Kane presented Beckham with a legacy cap recognizing his 115 England appearances. Both now have their places among England’s most-capped players. Kane and Kate have kept the academy photograph at home, a picture of an England idol that also happens to contain their own shared history.

Harry Kane and Kate’s life beyond football

The school friendship became a relationship years before the wedding. In a 2016 interview, Kane said they’d been together for almost five years. He announced their engagement in 2017, and they married two years later. They now have four children.

Kane had acknowledged Kate’s support through difficult results before. In a 2018 personal essay, he thanked his then-fiancée for her patience when results hadn’t gone his way.

His move to Bayern in 2023 brought a different adjustment. Kane spent his first months in Germany in a hotel while Kate and the children remained in England. After the family joined him following the winter break, he spoke about settling into a house, getting the children into school and beginning to feel at home in Munich.

Kate has also contributed to the Harry Kane Foundation’s work. In 2024, she helped design a charity jewelry collection with Loquet London to support the foundation and encourage conversations about mental health.

At the Palladium, Kane thanked their children as well, telling them he looked forward to bringing the trophy home. The boy beside Beckham in that school photograph is now a Ballon d’Or winner. The girl on the other side is the wife he wanted to share it with.
