Europe’s 10 summer signings already changing their teams

Side-by-side football portraits of a player in a white shirt and a Barcelona player standing in the rain.

Chelsea committed a reported $157 million (£117 million) to Morgan Rogers. Monza’s reported initial outlay for Gustavo Varela was about $2.8 million (€2.5 million). Both have delivered, yet neither leads this ranking. Stadio’s ranking of the smartest Premier League transfers judged the window at its close through fit, value, age and risk. Two months of football have shifted the test to delivered impact across Europe’s five major leagues.

The comparison uses domestic league performance through November 1 across the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, the Bundesliga and Ligue 1. Production and availability carry the most weight, followed by importance to the new team, tactical fit, value relative to the deal and speed of adaptation. Season-long loans qualify, as do transfers agreed earlier but completed for the summer, including Jérémy Jacquet’s move to Liverpool.

Goals create the clearest cases, but they don’t settle every place. Fullbacks Alejandro Grimaldo and Zachary Athekame have added attacking output without abandoning their defensive roles. Rodri’s influence at Barcelona appears less in his goal total than in the volume and accuracy of his passing. Ezri Konsa and Jacquet have been judged against the problems their clubs needed them to solve.

This is an early-season ranking rather than a final verdict on 10 careers or 10 balance sheets. It doesn’t force two representatives from each league, and European or domestic cup performances serve only as supporting evidence when the league cases are close. All five major leagues are represented because the strongest 10 produced that result.

Watch Stadio United’s top 10 summer signings countdown.

From bargain scorers to record-breaking arrivals

Christopher Nkunku, Anthony Gordon, Cristian Romero, Johan Manzambi and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were among the hardest omissions. Aubameyang’s early Deportivo impact gave him a top-10 case before knee surgery interrupted a run of five goals and two assists in seven La Liga appearances.

10. Ezri Konsa, Aston Villa to Arsenal

Arsenal bought Konsa after injuries to William Saliba and Jurriën Timber threatened their defensive depth during a title defense. The reported deal guaranteed Aston Villa about $68 million (£51 million), with another $5 million (£4 million) available in add-ons. It was expensive emergency planning, but Konsa has turned it into continuity.

He has appeared in eight of Arsenal’s nine league matches, starting seven and scoring once. Arsenal have taken 24 points and conceded only five goals, the fewest in the Premier League. Konsa’s calmness at center back and ability to shift to the right have helped Mikel Arteta preserve the structure instead of redesigning it around the injury list. He ranks 10th because Arsenal paid a premium for a proven player, not because his impact has been minor.

9. Jérémy Jacquet, Rennes to Liverpool

Jacquet arrived at 20 after Liverpool agreed the transfer during the previous winter and left him at Rennes for the rest of the season. He had missed several months with a shoulder injury and carried fewer than 40 Ligue 1 appearances into a starting role beside Virgil van Dijk. Liverpool have nevertheless used him from the opening weekend onward.

The French defender has started all nine league matches and played 775 minutes. His early work in the air, on the ground and in progressive possession showed why Liverpool were willing to commit a reported $74 million (£55 million) plus add-ons before he had completed a full top-flight season. Liverpool’s uneven results keep him below the more transformative names, but adaptation at center back is rarely this immediate.

8. Rodri, Manchester City to Barcelona

Rodri’s return to Spain supplied Barcelona with the specialist their midfield had lacked. He has played 10 league matches, started eight and completed more passes than any player in La Liga. His one goal and one assist barely describe a role built around controlling possession, directing pressure and giving more adventurous teammates a stable platform.

Barcelona lead La Liga with 30 points from 11 matches and have scored 46 goals. Rodri hasn’t erased every defensive vulnerability, but his presence has made their possession more deliberate and their buildup less dependent on one route through midfield. His limited direct output keeps him below the higher-scoring names. His footballing fit remains one of the clearest in the ranking.

7. Morgan Rogers, Aston Villa to Chelsea

A British-record price created a standard Rogers couldn’t satisfy with promise alone. Chelsea needed immediate production from a player signed for a reported $157 million (£117 million), and he has supplied it. Rogers has started all nine league matches, scored five goals and added an assist for a team that has climbed to fourth.

His versatility has also mattered. Rogers can carry from the left, operate behind the striker or move inside when Cole Palmer drifts toward the ball. The 2-0 win over Manchester United captured the appeal: he attacked open space through the center and finished a direct run with the control expected from a much more established Chelsea player. The price keeps him below cheaper deals with comparable or greater output, but the adaptation test has already been passed.

6. Zachary Athekame, AC Milan to Lyon on loan

Athekame has played every available Ligue 1 minute for Lyon. The 21-year-old right back has two goals and three assists across nine starts, giving a third-place team width, recovery speed and an extra runner beyond the ball. Lyon have conceded seven league goals, leaving them with one of the division’s best defensive records.

The loan structure strengthens the early value case. A player who struggled to establish a permanent role at Milan has become an automatic selection in France without an adaptation period. His five direct goal involvements already exceed the combined attacking return he produced across his league appearances for Milan and Young Boys last season. Lyon have found a starter rather than temporary cover.

5. Diego Moreira, Strasbourg to AC Milan

Moreira has needed only 395 Serie A minutes to produce four goals and three assists. The sample is smaller than those of the players around him, but it already includes decisive contributions against Lazio, Atalanta and Inter. His goal and two assists in Milan’s 3-1 derby victory gave the ranking its clearest single-match statement.

Milan signed the 22-year-old for the long term after his development at Strasbourg, and his ability to attack from either side has added speed to a team that can become static around the penalty area. Seven goal involvements in six league appearances won’t continue at the same rate. They don’t have to. Moreira has already changed Milan’s attacking options and helped move the club to fifth after 10 matches.

4. Alejandro Grimaldo, Bayer Leverkusen to Atlético Madrid

Grimaldo has brought Atlético exactly the kind of left-sided creation that can be difficult to find inside a disciplined defensive team. He has four goals and two assists in 10 La Liga appearances, with his set pieces, timing and passing range giving Diego Simeone another way to open matches that once depended on a narrow attacking margin.

Atlético sit second with 28 points from 11 games and have conceded eight goals, the best defensive record in the league. Grimaldo has contributed to that balance while remaining one of the team’s leading scorers. A left back producing six goal involvements for a title contender deserves to sit above several forwards with similar totals.

3. Gustavo Varela, Benfica to Monza

Varela has scored nine times in nine Serie A appearances and leads the division. Monza sit 16th and have won only twice, which prevents his individual explosion from becoming a broader team-success story. It also reveals how much of the attack rests on him: Varela has scored nine of Monza’s 17 league goals.

The deal sharpens the contrast. Benfica made the 21-year-old’s move permanent for a reported initial $2.8 million (€2.5 million), with bonuses and future-sale protections attached. Monza have turned that modest investment into the league’s leading scorer within two months. The sample is still small, but the goals already count, and few summer signings have carried a heavier share of their new club’s output.

2. Niclas Füllkrug, West Ham to Werder Bremen on loan

Füllkrug returned to Werder for a third spell after periods at West Ham and Milan. The one-year loan looked like an emotional reunion with practical upside. Eight league matches later, it looks like one of the season’s defining moves.

The 33-year-old has scored nine Bundesliga goals, five more than Harry Kane, and has found the net in seven consecutive league matches after drawing a blank on opening day. Werder are fifth with 15 points and unbeaten in seven. Füllkrug has restored a familiar focal point to the attack, given Daniel Thioune a reliable target for crosses and direct play, and converted nostalgia into immediate competitive value.

1. Lassine Sinayoko, Auxerre to Paris FC

Sinayoko has the most complete case. Paris FC signed him through 2029 after he produced 12 goals and four assists for Auxerre last season. The reported fee was about $9 million (€8 million), a manageable price for a proven Ligue 1 forward entering his prime.

He has responded with eight goals and five assists in nine league appearances. Paris FC have scored 16 times, meaning Sinayoko has been directly involved in 13 of them, and they sit fourth with 17 points. He has supplied penalties, open-play finishing, creative work and consistent availability rather than one isolated burst.

The season still has enough time to reorder every place. Rogers can make his record fee feel smaller, Rodri can deepen Barcelona’s control and Jacquet can turn a strong introduction into a defining first year. Through November 1, though, no summer arrival has combined production, price, availability and team lift as completely as Sinayoko.
