Real Madrid bring back green for 2026/27 away shirt

Real Madrid and adidas have turned the dark green accent from the club’s 2026/27 home kit into the main color of its new away shirt. The shift gives the season’s two jerseys a shared visual language without making them mirror images of one another.

Unveiled on July 23, the away shirt uses a deep green body with off-white branding, shoulder stripes, collar edging and cuffs. A tonal geometric field carries repeated RMCF initials across the fabric. From a distance, the shirt is restrained. Up close, the surface becomes more active, but the pattern remains subordinate to the crest and sponsor.

The Trefoil on the chest is the clearest departure from a conventional performance shirt. It gives the design a heritage-coded adidas mark while the construction remains built for match use. A narrow off-white insert shapes the collar, and the shorts and socks continue the same dark green and cream palette.

The authentic version uses Climacool+ and a lighter, close-cut construction. The replica version uses Climacool and a more conventional fit. The technical differences are substantial, but the appearance remains consistent across both versions. Adidas didn’t need to create a separate fashion shirt because the away design already carries that function.

The launch arrives one day after EA Sports FC 27 placed Kylian Mbappé at the center of a densely constructed football city. Real Madrid’s kit campaign takes the opposite visual approach. It keeps the garment, rather than the surrounding world, as the central object. That separation gives the away shirt an identity beyond another player-led commercial reveal.

Green has appeared only at intervals

Real Madrid’s first documented match in green came on Aug. 25, 1965, in Caracas. Madrid faced River Plate in a friendly and needed an alternative because the teams’ shirts created a color conflict. The organizers supplied green tops. The match ended 1-1, with Juan Bautista Agüero scoring for Madrid before Luis Cubilla equalized for River.

That appearance was practical rather than strategic. Green returned by design in 2012/13, when adidas produced a dark green third shirt with silver detailing for Madrid’s Champions League campaign. It sat behind the white home kit and navy away kit, making green a specialist European alternative rather than the club’s primary road uniform.

The 2026/27 version changes the status of the color. Green is now the designated away kit, not a borrowed solution or a third-choice European shirt. The progression runs from necessity in 1965, to controlled experimentation in 2012, to a full seasonal role in 2026.

It also completes an idea introduced by the home shirt. Dark green first appeared around the white jersey’s collar and cuffs, with pink stripes crossing the shoulders. The away kit expands the green, removes the pink and allows off-white to provide the contrast. Adidas has built the two shirts as parts of one system while preserving a separate character for each.

The design’s historical references are never made literal. There’s no replica of the borrowed 1965 shirt and no direct copy of the 2012 model. Instead, the new jersey uses a rare Madrid color, the Trefoil and the club initials to create a contemporary away identity. Green has moved from exception to identity, at least for one season.
